about

"Heavy Electronic Pacific Rock", also known with its acronym HEPR, has been released by Digitalis Industries in 2008. Usually considered by press and critics as Valerio's finest work to date, it also appeared in several rankings (best albums of 2008, Italian albums of the '00s, etc.) made by critics and fans. It comes fully remastered from the original masters. "HEPR" features 4 lenghty compositions called "Study For Saxophone And Electronics", "A New Vipassana", "Proud (To Be Kraut)" and the closing one called "The North Pole Vibes".

"Italian saxophonist and electroacoustic performer Valerio Cosi releases Heavy Electronic Pacific Rock as his first proper CD outing and by far the most widely available recording in his catalogue to date. The twenty-minute opening piece - titled 'Study For Saxophone And Electronics (Dedicated To Roberto Donnini)' - is especially arresting, layering and repeating saxophone phrases in its early stages, rendering Cosi as a one-man Philip Glass. After four minutes or so, the layers fall away to reveal a single slowed-down sax phrase, on top of which synth drones begin to amass, leading up to loosened up, miasmic soloing sounds that eventually consume themselves in a wash of noise and spoken recordings. It's an awesome piece of work and the remainder of the disc doesn't quite manage to hit the same highs, although the three pieces are still of a very high standard, each trying out new sonic configurations, whether the sustained tensions of 'A New Vipassana' or the atmospheric motorik rhythms of the (at least partially) self-explanatory 'Proud (To Be A Kraut)/A Burning OM: Reprise'. The final piece, whimsically titled 'North Pole Vibes' pairs a free-roaming lead sax with a bed of droning electronic permafrost. It's one of those rare instances in which avant-garde, microsound style composition combines with fluent musicianship without either element suffering, and it provides a fitting summary of what makes this hugely impressive album so outstanding." (BOOMKAT)

"Valerio Cosi may be young at only 22, but his talent is undeniable. He may be mostly known for his exquisite saxophone playing, but this Italian wunderkind doesn't stop there. Cosi composes strings of magic using all sorts of instrumentation and production tricks. Heavy Electronic Pacific Rock marks the first CD release in Cosi's ever-expanding discography, and he saved the best for this, his most widely-available release to date. Heavy Electronic Pacific Rock is a monster. Clocking in at nearly an hour in length, this Kraut-infused ride takes Cosi's modus operandi of juxtaposing multitudes of ideas that generally seem at odds and pushes it to its outer limits. Using techniques and ideas often found in contemporary free-jazz, but blurring them and whitewashing them with buckets of noise and Eastern-inspired rhythms, it is clear Valerio is on a mission. His music is the spaced-out reincarnations of the ghosts of giants. It is an arsenal of unique sonic phrasings built to bend your mind. This is Valerio Cosi at his peak as a performer, young as he is. Heavy Electronic Pacific Rock is his finest hour, his opus." (Foxy Digitalis)

"HEPR channels everything modern avant has to offer, yet it sounds completely reinvigorated and lively. For once, an artist hasn't settled into a genre for ease's sake; genres now bend to the will of Cosi and his feverish imagination. As shortsighted as it is to try and label Cosi's work, his music reflects the cultural histories of them all -- free jazz, avant-garde, kraut, minimalism, noise -- recontextualizing them in a way that's equally respectful of their spirits." (Tiny Mix Tapes).
